Accessibility
Built for every player
Accessibility in Volt Racers is not an optional add-on or a future plan. It is built in from the start and available to every player, on every platform, at no extra cost.
All accessibility settings are in the Settings screen — at the top, not buried at the bottom. They are saved to your account and follow you across every device you play on.
Conformance status
Volt Racers targets conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA for all web and in-app content.
Selected features exceed Level AA and meet Level AAA — these are noted individually in the sections below.
This statement applies to:
- The Volt Racers web application at
app.voltracers.app - The Volt Racers iOS application
- The Volt Racers Android application
- The Volt Racers website at
voltracers.app
Visual accessibility
Font size scaling
Players can choose from three font sizes: standard, large, and extra large. All text in the game and on the website scales with this setting — including the algebraic expressions on battery tokens, which reflow to accommodate larger text without truncating or overlapping.
Dyslexia-friendly font
A toggle in Settings switches all text to OpenDyslexic — an open-licensed font designed to improve readability for players with dyslexia. The font is loaded locally and does not require a network connection to display.
Note
Mathematical expressions on battery tokens remain in a monospace font when the dyslexia setting is on. This is intentional — algebraic notation is clearest in a consistent-width character style. The rest of the interface uses OpenDyslexic.
Colour-blind modes
Volt Racers includes three colour-blind palettes in addition to the standard palette:
- Deuteranopia / protanopia palette — adjusted for red-green colour vision deficiency, the most common type
- Tritanopia palette — adjusted for blue-yellow colour vision deficiency
All difficulty indicators — the visual signals on battery tokens that indicate expression complexity — use shape as a secondary signal alongside colour. A player who cannot distinguish the colours can always identify the difficulty level from the shape alone. Colour is never the only means of conveying information.
High contrast mode
The standard interface meets WCAG 2.2 Level AA contrast requirements throughout. A high contrast toggle strengthens borders and increases contrast on all interactive elements to exceed Level AAA requirements.
WCAG 2.2 AAAMotion and animation
Reduced motion
Players can turn off non-essential animations in Settings → Accessibility → Reduced motion.
Volt Racers also detects the operating system's
prefers-reduced-motion setting automatically. If a player
has reduced motion turned on at the OS level, the game respects that
preference without requiring any in-game configuration.
Core game motion — the car moving, the track scrolling — is retained in reduced motion mode, as it is essential to the game. Decorative animations — sparks, celebrations, background effects — are removed.
Motor accessibility and keyboard navigation
Full keyboard navigation
The entire game is playable without a mouse or touchscreen.
- In menus and screens: standard Tab / Shift+Tab navigation moves focus between elements. Enter or Space activates the focused element.
- In races: Tab cycles between the battery tokens. Enter or Space selects the focused battery. The currently focused battery is clearly indicated with a visible focus ring that meets WCAG 2.2 Level AA requirements for focus appearance.
Switch access
The keyboard navigation model is compatible with single-switch and two-switch access methods. Players using assistive switching devices can navigate to and select batteries using the same Tab and Enter behaviour described above.
Touch targets
All interactive elements meet a minimum touch target size of 44 × 44 px — the Apple Human Interface Guidelines recommendation and the WCAG 2.2 Level AA requirement for target size.
Battery tokens are a minimum of 80 × 80 px — significantly larger than the minimum — to support players who need a larger target during time-pressured gameplay.
WCAG 2.2 AAScreen reader support
Mathematical expressions
All algebraic expressions displayed on battery tokens are exposed to
screen readers. Expressions are provided in MathML where the rendering
environment supports it, with a plain text aria-label fallback
for environments that do not.
Example
The expression "3x + 1 = 13" is announced as "three x plus one equals thirteen."
Inequality expressions use plain language equivalents: "greater than", "less than", "greater than or equal to", "less than or equal to."
Game state announcements
The following game state changes are announced to screen readers via ARIA live regions:
- The player's x value at the start of each race
- The current charge level when it changes
- The result of a battery tap (correct or incorrect)
- The player's finishing position at the end of a race
- The post-race step-by-step feedback content
Screen reader compatibility
Volt Racers has been tested with the following screen readers:
- VoiceOver on iOS (Safari)
- VoiceOver on macOS (Safari)
- TalkBack on Android (Chrome)
- NVDA on Windows (Chrome and Firefox)
Audio
Sound and visual equivalents
All audio cues in Volt Racers have a visual equivalent. Players who cannot hear, or who play with sound off, receive the same information through visual feedback — a flash, an icon, or an on-screen indicator.
Sound effects are on by default. Background music is off by default. Both can be adjusted independently in Settings → Sound.
Full mute mode
A full mute option in Settings → Sound turns off all audio. The game provides complete visual-only feedback in this mode — no information is lost.
Known limitations
We are committed to being honest about where Volt Racers does not yet fully meet our accessibility goals.
Time pressure in races
Volt Racers is a racing game. Batteries must be evaluated under time pressure — this is fundamental to the game mechanic. Players who need more time to process algebraic expressions may find races difficult regardless of other accessibility settings.
The adaptive difficulty system reduces expression complexity for players who are struggling, which indirectly reduces the time pressure required. This is the primary mitigation available in v1.
We are considering a low-pressure practice mode in a future update that removes the time element entirely.
Complex expression rendering at small sizes
At extra small screen sizes (below 320 px width), long cubic expressions with four terms may be difficult to read even at the largest font size setting. We are monitoring this and will address it in a future update.
Screen reader testing coverage
We have not yet tested with JAWS on Windows. We intend to add JAWS to our testing matrix in the next release cycle.

Feedback and contact
We welcome feedback on the accessibility of Volt Racers. If you encounter a barrier that is not covered here, or if something is not working as described, please contact us.
When you get in touch, it helps to include:
- What you were trying to do
- What assistive technology you are using (if applicable)
- The device and operating system
- What happened
We take all accessibility reports seriously and will investigate every one.
